Description:
Microsoft Lync Server 2010, the successor to Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007, facilitates, unifies, and moderates real-time communication by a variety of methods. Microsoft Lync Server supports instant messaging (IM), presence information, web conferencing, and telephony, all utilizing pre-existing software and technology in an office environment.
This offering is Microsoft Lync Server 2010 Standard Edition, which runs on a single server and can support up to 5,000 users. Microsoft Lync Server 2010 Enterprise Edition can be distributed among multiple servers and support unlimited users.
Microsoft Lync Server can serve as a hub for all live communications within an organisation and with people outside the organisation. Users connected to Microsoft Lync Server can participate in IM and voice conversations and share Microsoft Office documents. Meetings can be requested and launched through a special menu in Microsoft Outlook or through a web interface.
Microsoft Lync Server's IM functionality works with Microsoft Lync, Microsoft Lync Mobile, and Microsoft Communicator for Mac 2011. Additionally, it provides access through a web-based interface and most popular IM clients, allowing constituents and associates outside of the office to communicate conveniently. When a third user is invited to a conversation, the IM Conferencing Server relays messages among participants regardless of what IM clients the participants are using. The transition to a multiple-user conference is automatic with no cosmetic changes.
Microsoft Lync Server can manage both voice over IP (VoIP) and traditional (PSTN) telephony. Participants may use any combination of physical phones and Microsoft Lync's voice interface. By adhering to industry telephony standards, Microsoft Lync Server can work within the confines of an organisation's existing telephone and PBX systems.
Through close integration with other Microsoft Office products, Microsoft Lync Server supports multiple venues for collaboration and application sharing. Microsoft PowerPoint presentations can be utilized and distributed within a web conference, and Microsoft Office documents can be edited in real time by local and remote participants.
Microsoft Lync Server also accommodates live audio and video conferencing among multiple users. Microsoft Lync Server is compatible with Microsoft RoundTable or any device adherent to Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP) or Real-time Transport Control Protocol (RTCP).
Other capabilities include the following:
- Microsoft Lync Server is incorporated into the interfaces of other Microsoft Office products, including Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft SharePoint, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Excel.
- The IM conferencing server is compatible with all major IM systems, allowing clients and associates to communicate with employees without installing new software.
- Encrypted communication through Transport Layer Security (TLS) and Secure Real-time Transport Protocol (SRTP) protects sensitive information without limiting software functionality and eliminates the need for remote users to establish virtual private network (VPN) connections.
64-bit Only: Microsoft Lync Server 2010 requires 64-bit hardware and a 64-bit operating system.
